Impact of Cutting Section 8 Housing Vouchers

The potential elimination of Section 8 housing vouchers and roughly 40% cuts to rental assistance were included in a recent White House request to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). The White House proposal to shrink HUD’s antipoverty programs doesn’t come in a vacuum. The administration has already pushed out thousands of agency employees and signaled more staff cuts to come. It’s canceled contracts that support low-income housing, and targeted housing and community development programs at other agencies. Officials and advocates in Cleveland, Boston and Seattle are sounding the alarm over Trump’s budget proposal that would cut billions from HUD. Section 8 vouchers help families cover rent for apartments, townhomes, and single-family homes. The proposed shift to block grants would give local governments more control but likely reduce the amount of federal funding available. Advocates fear this would lead to widespread rent hikes and push more families into homelessness.

Currently, over 23,000 federal vouchers help low-income families afford market-rate housing in many states. If the Trump plan moves forward, that crucial support could be on the chopping block — putting millions at risk of losing their homes.
